Project Character
Brandi
There is a distinct discussion I remember having with Brandi when discussing her most recent photo session. She was displeased with the outcome and frustrated. I shared my favorite quote with her, which is by Herbert Clark, "If you want to increase your success, then double your fail rate". This was a sentiment that was hard for both of us to accept. I've been there many times, and still have those moments where the defeat is crushing, but one re-groups, analyzes the process and takes a hard look and makes clear admissions about errors, triumphs, and all the details that lie between to make the next one better. We go through life wondering at times how all is not lost. My interactions with Brandi have often been engaged with photographic discussion, but too have we discussed the life within it - the life in art and how we might excel at conveying such an abstract product.
But of all the photographers that I've both formally and informally mentored, Brandi has been the exception. Her commitment to the work is undeniable. Her drive to continually improve is innate. And as she's grown in her craft I've enjoyed pointing out all the incredible things she's truly accomplished. Browsing her photos are more than a pleasure, perhaps that's because we value similar qualities of photography. Perhaps is the truly subjective values that we both share that contribute to a deeper understanding of photography and how we can share our knowledge and evolve.
I like to turn life into art. So does Brandi. And It is my pleasure to introduce you to her from behind my camera, stored as ones and zeros only passed through complex algorithms that separate those values to be turned into an unmatched combination of light and color which is a language of heart and soul we speak, evoke, and share.
Welcome to the gallery Brandi. I knew one day you'd end up here.
